About This Song

I have a habit of putting too many elements in my songs. When writing, it’s easy to just add more and more elements— but great songs have a kind of minimalism where each element has a place and there’s a place for each element. Surrender is one of the only songs I’ve made where I feel like there aren’t too many elements. It feels minimal and self-contained. That makes me feel happy.

Surrender explores a dark side of love. It can't always be your way when you’re in love. You can't always be right. You have to give up certain things. You have to adjust. But what happens when you're never right? What happens when you start giving up too much? What happens when you're no longer adjusting, but contorting? What does that look like? What does that feel like?

Lyrics

Look at what I’ve done
Made a mess of everything
I’m a fly stuck
In your web again
Once again I am
Crawling back to you
What am I doing?
It’s not like you ease the pain

I’m only just a human
Running from my centers
Rail against my boundaries
Bang my head on ceilings
My body shakes in shock with you
Call that what you want to
I call it surrender
Paint the world to remember
It’s another name for love

Lay my body down
Let you can walk on me
Crawl on my knees
I’m just a dog to you
No matter how far you fall
I’ll be what you want me to be
I’ll handle the world thats given to me
No matter how far you fall
I’ll be what you want me to be
I’ll handle the world thats given to me

I’m only just a human
Running from my centers
Rail against my boundaries
Bang my head on ceilings
My body shakes in shock with you
Call that what you want to
I call it surrender
Paint the world to remember
It’s another name for love
